Most new moon advice asks you to write a long list. Ten intentions, twenty, a page of hopes for every corner of life. I understand the appeal. The new moon feels like a fresh start, and fresh starts invite ambition.
But the old practice runs the other way. The dark moon is small and quiet. It holds one seed well and many seeds poorly. The November new moon, falling on 9 November 2026, is a particularly good night to learn that lesson.
Why this new moon is different
Samhain on 31 October closed the old year. The Hunter's Moon before it, on 26 October, was the last gathering. By 9 November the fields are bare, the nights are long, and the moon has thinned away to nothing.
This is the first new moon of the dark half of the year. In folk thinking, what is planted now lies in the ground all winter. It is not rushed. It roots slowly in the cold, and when the light returns it is already strong. A wish set on this moon is not meant to bloom by next week. It is meant to still be standing in spring.
That asks for one wish, chosen carefully.
How to choose your one intention
Sit down in the days before 9 November with a sheet of paper and write every wish that comes to you. Do not edit. Then go through them with three questions.
- Which one would change the others? Often a single wish sits underneath several. A new job may carry the money, the confidence and the move.
- Which one keeps coming back? The wish that has returned every month for a year is usually the true one.
- Which one can you say in a single sentence? If it needs a paragraph, it is probably two wishes wearing one coat.
When you have your one wish, cross out the rest gently. They are not lost. They will have their own moons.
The Sealed Petition on a dark moon
For a single wish that does not fit a named working, I cast the Custom Spell, whose craft is the Sealed Petition. It suits the dark moon very well, because it is about one thing, said once, and then left to work in the dark.
- Your wish is written on petition paper, exactly in your words. Nothing is polished or rephrased.
- A white candle is lit with a pinch of salt beside it. White takes no side against anyone; salt keeps the working clean.
- The wish is spoken aloud once. Clearly, and not repeated.
- The paper is folded toward you, because a petition is something kept, not thrown away.
- It is sealed with wax. The seal means the wish is never argued with again.
That last step is the one that matters most on a new moon. Many people set an intention and then spend the next month turning it over, doubting it, rewording it. The seal ends that. The seed is in the ground. You leave it there.
When a named working fits better
If your one wish turns out to be clearly about love, money or protection, a named working may suit it more closely. A wish for a new love that has no name yet sits well with the Soulmate Attraction Spell. A wish for a new job belongs with the Job Spell. The petition is for the wish that is truly your own shape.
A small new moon practice of your own
On the evening of 9 November, turn the lights low. Write your one wish on a clean sheet of paper in plain words. Read it aloud once. Fold it toward yourself, twice, and put it somewhere private: under a book you love, in a drawer you rarely open. Do not take it out to reread it. When you notice the first sign that the wish is moving, you may open it, and not before.
On 24 November the Beaver Moon will be full. It is a good night simply to look up and notice what has shifted, without adding anything new.
What you receive
When I cast the Sealed Petition for you on this moon, I send a written record by email afterwards: the wish as it was written, how it was spoken and sealed, what I felt as the wax closed, and the signs to watch for through the winter. It becomes the page you return to when spring comes and you want to see how far the seed has grown.
Frequently asked questions
When is the new moon in November 2026?
The new moon falls on 9 November 2026, nine days after Samhain. The following full moon, the Beaver Moon, is on 24 November 2026.
How many intentions should I set on a new moon?
Folk practice favours one clear intention. The dark moon holds a single wish well, and a long list tends to scatter the working across too many things.
What is a sealed petition spell?
A wish is written on paper in your own words, spoken aloud once over a white candle with a pinch of salt, folded toward you and sealed with wax. The seal means the wish is not reworded or doubted again.
What should I do after setting a new moon intention?
Leave it alone. Put the paper somewhere private and do not keep rereading or rewording it. Carry on with the practical steps your wish needs and watch for the first signs of movement.
