How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Sugar Circle. Your name sits at the centre of a circle of the names or roles of the people you work with, a sugar cube on each, on the sweetening plate. One by one, named aloud, the cubes are dropped into a single glass of tea and stirred with a wooden spoon, in the spirit of the Turkish saying 'eat sweet, speak sweet'. The tea is drunk to the last sip.
- You at the centreI write your name and date of birth on a paper and set it in the middle of my plate for sweetening. The working turns around you, because it is your working day that needs to ease.
- The circle of namesAround your paper I lay the names of the people you work with, in a ring. If you do not know or do not wish to share names, I write the roles you gave me, such as "my manager" or "my team".
- A sugar cube on eachOn every name in the ring I place one cube of sugar. There is an old Anatolian saying, "let us eat sweet and speak sweet", and sugar has always been brought to a table that has grown tense.
- The glass of teaI brew a single glass of tea, served in a slim tulip glass as it is at Turkish tables. Only one glass is used, because the whole point is many people meeting in one sweetness.
- One by oneI lift the cubes one at a time, say the name or role beneath each aloud, and drop it into the tea. Then I read your wish in your own words and stir with a wooden spoon.
- To the last sipI drink the tea to the very last sip, leaving nothing in the glass: that is the seal. Every cube dissolved into one sweetness is taken in whole.
- Kept togetherThe papers from the circle are gathered and placed in one envelope, all together. Then I write up the working and send your record by email.
