How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Woven Braid. Three strips of cloth are braided together, one for them, one for you and one for what lies between you, with salt and a white candle. Each crossing is a return. The braid is hung inside the door and never handled again.
- Three strips of clothI cut three strips of cloth for the braid. One is for them, one is for you and one is for what lies between you, the shared life that has been left untended.
- Naming each strandI write your name and date of birth on a slip of paper and lay it beside the strip that is yours. Their name is spoken over the second strip, and your wish, in your own words, over the third.
- Salt and the white candleA white candle is lit and a ring of salt is laid around the three strips. The salt keeps the working clean of old hurts, and the white flame keeps it honest and steady.
- BraidingI braid the three strips together slowly. Each crossing is a return, one more time the strands come back toward the centre, and I say both names at every pass.
- Where the braid tightensAs the braid grows I notice where it wants to loosen and where it pulls firm. Those places usually mirror what you told me about the drift, and I give them extra care.
- Hung inside the doorWhen the braid is finished and tied off, it is hung inside the door of my working room. It stays where people come and go, because attachment lives in ordinary comings and goings.
- Never handled againThe seal is that the braid is never handled again. It hangs as it was woven. I then write out what I saw while braiding and email you the record.
