How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Red Thread. Two names are written on two separate papers and a single red thread is passed between them, tied at both ends over rose petals and a white candle. The seal is the line held from both sides, never only from one.
- Two papers, not oneI write your name and date of birth on one paper and their name on a second, separate paper. They are never written together, because the whole working rests on two people each holding their own end.
- Rose petals and the white candleThe two papers are laid a short distance apart on a bed of rose petals, and the white candle is lit between them. White keeps the working clear and honest; the petals soften the ground the thread will cross.
- Speaking your wishBefore the thread touches anything I read your wish aloud in your own words. If you asked for devotion, I say devotion; if you asked for desire, I say desire. The thread is shaped by what you named.
- Passing the threadI pass a single red thread from your paper, over the petals and past the flame, to theirs. As it crosses I say both names so the thread knows which two people it joins.
- Tying both endsThe thread is tied first around their paper and then around yours. I tie them evenly, with the same care on each side, because a line tied tighter at one end only pulls.
- The seal from both sidesThe seal is the line held from both sides, never from one. I lift both papers together until the thread draws taut between them, then set them down side by side to rest while the candle finishes.
