How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Two Bowls. Two bowls of water sit side by side with their name beneath the first, a white candle and a pinch of mint between them. At the end the water is poured from the first bowl into the second and never taken back: a one-way passage from thought to action.
- Where it comes fromThis is water calling, an old habit of Anatolian and Slavic water workings in which water is poured from one vessel into another to move something along its way.
- Two bowls side by sideI set two bowls of water next to each other. The first holds the thought of you that already lives in their mind; the second is the phone in their hand. The gap between them is the gap you described to me.
- Their name beneath the firstI write their name on a paper and slide it under the first bowl. Your name and date of birth are kept beside me as I work, so it is clear whose message is being called.
- The white candle and the mintA white candle is lit between the two bowls and a pinch of mint is laid beside it. Mint is the herb of quickening, of silence being broken.
- Speaking your wishOver the bowls I read your wish exactly as you wrote it, whether that is a short message, a reply to an old conversation or simply a question from them. The water hears what kind of contact it is carrying.
- The pouringThen I lift the first bowl and pour its water into the second, saying their name as it falls. The thought passes over into the bowl of action.
- One way onlyThe water is never poured back, and that is the seal: a passage that goes in one direction. The second bowl rests through the night, and afterwards I email you the written record.
