How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Bread and Salt Oath. Two small morsels of bread are dipped in the same pinch of salt and laid on two name papers side by side under a white candle, overnight. In the morning both morsels are set outside for the birds: loyalty is not hidden or held in anyone's hand, it stands in the open.
- The right of bread and saltIn Anatolia and the Balkans people speak of the right of bread and salt: a debt of loyalty between those who have eaten at one table. Offering bread and salt is also an old Slavic and Balkan sign of a promise kept.
- Two names, one lineI write your name and date of birth on one paper and your partner's name on another, and lay them side by side at the same height on my sweetening plate. I read your wish over them as you wrote it.
- Two morselsFrom a single slice of bread I pinch two small morsels. The slice is not broken in half; two pieces come from one loaf, as two people come to one table.
- The same pinch of saltBoth morsels are dipped into one and the same pinch of salt. I say both names as each one touches it, because the oath is shared, not placed on one person alone.
- Through the nightEach morsel is laid on one of the names, and a white candle is lit beside them. The two rest side by side on the plate through the night.
