How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Dawn Water. Water drawn before dawn first lifts the dullness with a pinch of salt, then feeds the light with three rose petals. At sunrise the water is poured on the threshold and the bowl is never used for anything else.
- Hearing your wishI start from the words in your order form. If you wrote that you want to feel radiant, or rested, or simply like yourself again, those are the words I carry to the water.
- Drawing the water before dawnBefore the sky lightens I draw fresh water into a bowl kept for this purpose. Your name paper, with your full name and date of birth, rests beside it so the water knows whose face it is for.
- Lifting the dullnessA pinch of salt goes into the water first. Salt draws out, so this is the clearing stage: whatever tiredness and heaviness you described is spoken into the bowl by name and given to the salt.
- Feeding the lightOnly after the clearing do three rose petals go in, one at a time. With each petal I speak part of your wish, so the beauty you asked for is fed back in once the old weight has gone out.
- Waiting for the sunThe bowl stays still until the first light comes. I do not stir it again or add to it; the salt and the rose are left to settle together in the water.
- Pouring at the thresholdAt sunrise I pour the water across the threshold while saying your name. The light goes out into the day, where you walk, rather than staying in a bowl.
- Sealing the bowlThe bowl is then set aside and never used for anything else. That is the seal. Your written record follows, describing the water, the petals and the morning it was poured.
