This working is called The Scented Handkerchief. A clean cotton handkerchief is touched with rose water, or with your own scent, at its four corners and folded in four around their name paper and a dried rose petal, beside a white candle. It is put away folded and never washed: the trace stays, and what is missed is the trace.
- An Anatolian customIn Anatolia a scented handkerchief has long been given as a token of love and remembrance, and rose water is the everyday scent of the home. A scent is barely noticed up close and remembered at once from a distance.
- Opening the handkerchiefI spread a clean cotton handkerchief in front of my love plate. It is an everyday cloth, the kind carried in a pocket, because what is missed is the everyday.
- The four cornersI touch each of the four corners with a drop of rose water, or with the scent you named in your order, if you told me what you wear. This is your trace, and I say your name and date of birth as each drop goes on.
- Their name and the petalTheir name is written on a small paper and laid in the centre of the cloth, with a dried rose petal on top for memory. Before folding I read your wish aloud, word for word.
- Folded in fourI fold the handkerchief in four around the paper, so the scent is kept on the inside. A white candle is lit right beside it, and the cloth is not touched until the flame has gone out.
- Put away unwashedThe folded handkerchief is laid in a drawer and never washed: that is the seal. It is not opened or checked again, because the trace now lives in the gap in their day, not in the cloth. The written account of it follows in an email.
