How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Four-Corner Bundle. Two names are laid side by side on a square cloth with a handful of wedding rice and a sugar cube, the way a trousseau bundle is made. The four corners are folded to the centre and the fourth is tucked under, never knotted, beside a white candle. The bundle is closed but one hand can open it: the question is not locked away, it is kept ready to be asked.
- The trousseau bundleIn Anatolia a bride's gifts are laid on a square of cloth and its four corners folded to the centre to make a bohça, a bundle. Rice is thrown at weddings, and on the day of the promise sweets are shared. A proper bundle is never knotted; its last corner is tucked under.
- The cloth on the plateI spread a clean square cloth over my sweetening plate. It stands for the fabric of a shared home.
- Two names side by sideYour name and date of birth go on one paper and your partner's name on another, and both are laid next to each other in the middle of the cloth. I read your wish over them in the words you gave me.
- Rice and a sugar cubeA handful of wedding rice is scattered around the two names, for celebration and plenty, and a single sugar cube is placed in the centre, the sweetness of the day a promise is made.
