How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Flame Carried Home. The first white candle is lit with a single match and the second only from its flame, wick to wick. The second candle, with its name paper, is carried to another room to burn a while and then brought back, still lit, to the same table beside the first. It is never lit with a match again: only from its twin, or not at all.
- A holy light traditionAcross the Mediterranean and the Balkans, on Easter night, the flame is passed from candle to candle and carried home still burning. Fire taken from another candle, not struck fresh, is the heart of this working.
- Two name papersI write your name and date of birth on one paper and their name on a second, never on the same sheet. Each paper is placed at the foot of its own white candle.
- One match, one flameA single match is struck for the first candle, your candle. As it catches I read your wish aloud in your own words. No second match is lit for the rest of the working.
- Wick to wickThe second candle, standing on their name, is lit only from the first, wick touching wick. I say both names while the flame passes across.
- The other roomI carry the second candle to another room, with a pinch of salt laid on that room's threshold, and let it burn there for a while. This is the separation you described, given its own place.
- Carried backStill lit, its flame shielded by my palm, the second candle is brought back to my love plate and set on the same table beside the first. The two burn side by side and each goes out on its own.
- The sealThe second candle is never lit with a match again: if it burns once more, it is from its twin or not at all. The candles are not joined and their wax never meets. The written record is emailed to you.
