Every year, as October closes, the letters I receive change their tone. People write less about new love and more about the one that went. A partner who left in spring. A long silence that began in summer. The name that still sits at the edge of every quiet evening.
I do not think that is an accident. Samhain has always pulled the mind backwards, toward what has been lost, and it is one of the few nights of the year that seems to answer.
Why Samhain belongs to the lost
Samhain falls on 31 October. In the old reckoning it was the end of the year: the last of the harvest was in, the animals were brought down from the hills, and the dark half of the year began. People believed the veil between this world and the next grew thin that night, so that what was far away came close.
That is why it was, and still is, a night for remembering. Families laid an extra place at the table for those who had gone before. Candles were left in windows so that anyone travelling home could find the way. The whole night was built around one idea: the door stands open, and whoever belongs here may walk back through it.
A love that has drifted away fits that idea very naturally. You are not summoning a stranger. You are lighting the window for someone who already knows the road.
A word about the ancestors
Before any working on Samhain night, I set a small cup of water and a pinch of salt aside for those who came before me. Nothing is asked of them. It is a courtesy, the way you would greet the elders of a house before you sit down. If you keep your own customs for your people on this night, keep them first. A love working never takes their place.
The waning moon on 31 October 2026
In 2026 the full moon, the Hunter's Moon, falls on 26 October. By Samhain the moon is waning, growing thinner each night toward the new moon of 9 November.
Many people assume a love working should wait for a waxing moon, and for drawing in a new person that is often right. But calling back a lost love is not only drawing. It is mending, and mending begins by letting go of what stands in the way: the old argument, the pride, the fear of being the first to speak. The waning moon carries those things off. Samhain on a waning moon is, if anything, a better night for this kind of work than a bright one.

How the Mended Cord is worked
The working I use for this is the Come Back To Me Spell, and its craft is called the Mended Cord. It is very simple, and it asks for honesty.
- A single cord is laid out on the table beside a white candle and a small bowl of chamomile.
- The cord is truly cut. Not frayed, not pretended. The break between you is real, and the working begins by admitting it.
- The two ends are tied again, exactly where they parted. Not further along, not in a new place. The bond is joined at the point where it broke.
- The knot is left visible. It is not hidden, trimmed or covered. That knot is the seal.
The reason for the visible knot is the heart of the whole working. Reconciliation is never made by pretending nothing happened. A bond that is joined honestly, with the mark of the break still showing, holds far longer than one that is quietly patched over.
What the Mended Cord is not
It does not drag anyone back or reach into their choices. It lights the window and joins the cord from your side, and it leaves the road home clear and easy to find. If the one you are calling has made a firm new life with someone else, I will tell you so plainly rather than cast against it.
If the parting was a fight still burning with anger, the Reconciliation Spell may suit you better, because it cools the heat before it adds warmth. If they simply walked away and left the door ajar, the Bring Ex Back Spell works along that open threshold.
What to do yourself on Samhain night
You do not need a full altar. Light one candle in a window and leave it burning while you sit a while. Say their name once, quietly, and then say what you would want them to know if they walked through the door. Do not repeat it. On Samhain, one clear word carries further than many.
What you receive
When I cast the Mended Cord for you, I send a written record by email afterwards: how the cord was cut and joined, what I felt as the knot was tied, and the signs worth watching for in the weeks after. Many of the people I work for on Samhain tell me they read that record again on the first cold night of November, and find it settles them.
Frequently asked questions
Is Samhain a good night for a love spell?
Samhain is traditionally a night for calling home what was lost, because the veil between worlds is said to be thin. That makes it especially suited to workings that bring back a love that has drifted away, rather than workings for a brand new person.
What is the moon phase on Samhain 2026?
On 31 October 2026 the moon is waning. The full Hunter's Moon falls on 26 October and the next new moon is on 9 November, so Samhain sits in the waning half of the cycle.
Can you do a love spell on a waning moon?
Yes. A waning moon suits workings that release what stands in the way, such as pride, old arguments or fear. Mending a broken bond begins with that kind of release, so the waning moon supports it well.
What happens in a Come Back To Me spell?
A single cord is cut, then tied again exactly where it broke, beside a white candle and chamomile. The knot is left visible as the seal, because an honest join holds better than a hidden one.
Come Back To Me Spell
The Mended Cord: the break is cut clean, then tied again exactly where it parted, and the knot is left in plain sight.
