How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Water of Seven Doors. A spoonful of water from each of seven different sources is gathered into one bowl over a pinch of salt, and your name paper is wiped end to end with a cloth dipped in it, in one direction only, beside a white candle. The paper dries in clean white cloth, and the water is carried to a crossroads away from home and poured out, and the caster walks back without looking back.
- Only your nameI write your name and date of birth on a paper, and your wish in the words you chose. No other name is ever written, because this working does not look for a culprit.
- Seven doors of waterInto one bowl I gather a spoonful of water from seven different sources, a kitchen tap, rainwater, a spring and others, naming each as it goes in. The Anatolian custom holds that what came from one place is untied by water from many doors.
- Salt beneathA pinch of salt goes into the bottom of the bowl, and a white candle is lit beside it for the untying. All the water is carried with a single wooden spoon.
- Wiped in one directionI dip a clean white cloth into the seven waters and wipe your name paper from one end to the other, in one direction only, never back and forth. What had turned against you is made to run straight again.
- Drying in whiteThe paper is laid in clean white cloth to dry and is kept in that cloth afterwards. Nothing is scrubbed away from you; the knot is loosened and the paper rests.
- The crossroadsThe seal is the road left behind. I carry the used water to a crossroads away from home, pour it out, and walk back without looking back, as the old uncrossing custom asks. Because no other name was written, nothing returns to anyone.
