This working is called The Melting Salt. A lump of rock salt, named as the weight of the debt, is dropped into a glass of water over your name paper beside a white candle. The glass is never stirred: the salt melts at its own pace, sitting after sitting. When the last of it is gone the water is sent down the sink with the tap running, and the glass goes back to being an ordinary glass.

- The glass over your nameYour name and date of birth go onto a small paper, and a glass of clear water is set down on top of it. Beside the glass stands my money and plenty plate, the place kept ready for whatever comes in.
- Naming the rock saltI choose a single lump of rock salt, sized to how heavily you described the load, from walnut to palm. Holding it, I say aloud that this is the weight, then speak your wish and let it drop into the water.
- The white candleA white candle is lit beside the glass for calm reckoning, the steady mind that can open a letter without flinching. In Anatolia people speak of something melting away like salt; here the saying is spoken to the weight and never to any person.
- Left unstirredFrom then on the glass is not touched and never stirred. At each sitting I look at how much smaller the lump has become and note it for your record. The salt keeps its own pace, and I do not hurry it.
- Down the sinkThe seal comes when the last of the salt has gone without any help from me. The water is poured down the sink with the tap running, the glass is rinsed, and it goes back to being an everyday glass on the shelf.
