How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Oil on the Water. Your name paper lies under a deep white dish of water beside a white candle, and drops of olive oil fall from a fingertip onto the water, as in the Mediterranean malocchio custom. Where the drops spread, the eye is there: the water is changed and the drops fall again until they stay round and whole. The last water is salted and sent away, and the dish is scoured clean with salt.
- Your name under the dishI write your name and date of birth on a paper and lay it under a deep white dish of water. Your wish, as you worded it, is spoken over the dish before the first drop falls.
- The candle and the oilA white candle is lit beside the dish. I dip my fingertip into olive oil, the way it is done in the Italian malocchio and Greek xematiasma custom, and let three drops fall onto the water.
- Reading the dropsI watch how the oil behaves. If the drops spread, stretch or split in two, the eye is there. If they stay round, it is not.
- Changing the waterWhen the drops spread, the water is changed for fresh and the drops fall again. Each round takes a little more of the eye away, and I count every round for your record.
- Until the drops stay roundI go on until three drops rest on the water round and whole. That is when the eye has been lifted, and I describe in your record exactly how many rounds it took, without inflating it.
- Salt and a clean dishThe last water is salted and sent away from the house. The seal is the dish itself, scoured with salt and dried clean, ready to be an ordinary dish again.
