How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Blessed Corners. A pinch each of salt, rice and sugar is set in the four corners of the home, starting from the corner nearest the door and moving sunwise, and a fifth pinch sits on a white plate at the centre under a white candle over the household's names. After seven days the corners are gathered with a damp cloth, wrapped with the fifth pinch in one white paper and kept in the kitchen cupboard where the family's food is kept.
- The household on paperI write the names of everyone who lives in your home on one paper, the way you listed them, children included only by name. Your wish for the home, in your words, is written beneath.
- Your home laid outFrom what you tell me I mark out four corners for your home, beginning with the corner nearest your front door. Blessing a new house corner by corner is an old Anatolian and Mediterranean custom.
- The white candle at the centreAt the centre of the four corners goes a white plate, with the household paper beneath it and a white candle lit above. It stands for the heart of the house.
- Three pinches at each cornerMoving sunwise from the door, I lay a pinch of salt, a pinch of rice and a pinch of sugar at each corner. Salt keeps the house clean, rice keeps it provided for, and sugar keeps the people in it gentle with one another.
- A sentence for each sideAt every corner I speak one sentence for that side of your home: the kitchen, the bedrooms, the door, whatever you described. Then the fifth pinch of all three goes onto the white plate at the centre.
- Seven days untouchedThe corners are left alone for seven days. Nothing is swept or moved, so the blessing can settle before it is gathered.
- One paper in the kitchenOn the seventh day I gather the four corners with a damp cloth and wrap them together with the fifth pinch in a single white paper. The seal is that parcel kept in the kitchen cupboard where food is stored, five points of the house held as one.
