How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Round Loaf. A round loaf is sliced on the sweetening plate, the first slice for the house and then one slice for each member of the family, named aloud and laid on their name, beside a white candle. The slices are then fitted back into one round and wrapped whole in a white cloth overnight. In the morning the bread is eaten at the table, never wasted.
- A paper for every nameI write each family member's name on their own small paper, exactly as you listed them, and yours with your date of birth. Nobody is marked as the cause of the trouble; every name is written the same way.
- The round loafI set a round loaf on my sweetening plate beside a white candle. This comes from the table customs of Anatolia and the Balkans, where one round bread is cut for the whole household, a share for each by name.
- The first slice for the houseThe first slice is always cut for the house itself, the home you share, before any person is served. I lay it at the head of the plate and speak your wish for the family over it.
- A slice for each nameThen I cut one slice for each person, saying their name aloud as the knife goes through, and lay it on the paper that carries that name. I cut in the order you asked, eldest first or beginning with whoever is most hurt.
- Back into one roundWhen every name has its slice, I fit the slices back together into the round they came from. Each share stays itself, yet sits beside the others as a single loaf again.
- Wrapped for the nightThe seal is the whole loaf wrapped in a clean white cloth and left overnight, every share belonging once more to the same bread. In the morning it is set on the table and eaten, never thrown away.
