How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Water Poured Behind. A white candle is lit inside the door and the traveller's name paper, folded with salt and a sprig of rosemary, is carried out toward the road. A glass of water is poured on the road behind it with the old words 'go like water, come like water'. The empty glass stands inside the door, mouth up, and is not filled again until the traveller has arrived.
- The traveller's paperI write the traveller's name on a paper, with where they are going and the date they set out. If you are the traveller, it is your name and your date of birth. Your wish for the journey goes beneath.
- Salt and rosemaryThe paper is folded around a pinch of salt and a sprig of rosemary. Salt keeps the road clean, and rosemary is the old herb of remembering the one who has gone.
- The candle inside the doorA white candle is lit just inside the door. It burns on the home side of the threshold, the side the traveller will one day walk back into.
- Carried toward the roadI carry the folded paper out through the door toward the road, the way the traveller leaves. The water is not poured on the doorstep; it follows the one who is going.
- Go like water, come like waterBehind the paper I pour a glass of water onto the road and say the old words, go like water, come like water. This custom is shared across Anatolia, Greece and the Balkans.
- The empty glassThe seal is the empty glass set inside the door with its mouth turned up. It is not filled again until the arrival date you gave me, and then it is filled and the water is drunk.
