How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Key in the Basil. The spare key of the house rests on the address paper beside a green candle while your farewell to the home is read aloud. The key is then wrapped in a sprig of fresh basil, the herb that welcomes guests at Mediterranean windows, and set inside a window with its tip facing the street. It is not brought back in; when the sale is done it goes to the new owner with its dried basil.
- The address paperI write the full address of your home on a paper, and beneath it your name and date of birth. The paper is laid on my plate for abundance.
- The spare keyYour spare key, or one that stands for it, is set on top of the address. This is the key that will one day go to the new owner, so it is treated as theirs from the start.
- Your farewellA green candle for passage is lit, and I read aloud the farewell you wrote to your home, word for word. This is the heart of the working: a house that has been thanked and said goodbye to can be let go.
- Wrapped in basilThe key is wrapped in a sprig of fresh basil. In Greek and Anatolian homes, basil at the window welcomes guests and marks the good will of a house toward whoever comes next.
- Facing the streetKey and basil are placed just inside a window that looks onto the street, with the tip of the key pointing outward. The house now faces the road where its next family will arrive.
- Fresh sprigsAs the basil dries, a fresh sprig is laid beside it. The welcome is kept green for as long as the key waits in the window.
- The sealThe key is never brought back inside: that is the seal. When the sale is complete it goes to the new owner with its dried basil. Your written record follows by email.
