How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Softened Wax. Hard beeswax is softened slowly in the palm, never over a flame, with a drop of olive oil, and the name is pressed into it. When it cools it keeps the shape it was given; wrapped in linen, it is never warmed again. What has softened does not return to its old hardness.

- Softening in the palmThe wax is warmed slowly in my palm, never over a flame. A flame would force it; a palm persuades it.
- A drop of olive oilWhen the wax begins to give, I work in a single drop of olive oil. Oil is what lets a stiff thing move without cracking, and I speak your wish as it goes in.
- Pressing the nameInto the softened wax I press their name, letter by letter, while saying it aloud together with yours. The wax takes the name the way a heart takes an impression when it finally stops resisting.
