How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Sprouted Lentils. A handful of green lentils is laid on a damp cloth over your wish paper, as the Nowruz greens are sprouted before spring, and a green candle is lit on the first day. The cloth is moistened each morning until the first green appears. The sprouts are never cut or thrown out: they are planted whole in a pot of earth.
- Your wish paperI write your name and date of birth on a paper, and beneath it the answer to one question in your own words: what is the new thing? The paper goes under a plate, face up, so the whole working grows over it.
- A damp cloth and lentilsA cotton cloth is soaked and spread over the plate, and a handful of green lentils is scattered on top. This is the Nowruz custom of Anatolia, Iran and the Caucasus, where a plate of greens is sprouted before spring as the first green of the new year.
- The green candleOn the first day a green candle is lit beside the plate. I read your wish aloud over the lentils as it burns, naming the new chapter the way you named it.
- Every morningEach morning I moisten the cloth with a handful of water from a glass kept beside it. I say your name as I do, because a beginning is kept alive by being tended, not by being announced once.
- The first greenI watch for the first green shoot and note the morning it appears. That morning goes into your record, since it tells me something about how your new start wants to move.
- Planted wholeThe sprouts are never cut and never thrown away. They are lifted from the cloth whole and planted in a pot of earth: that is the seal, the step from a plate to soil. Then your written record follows by email.
