How your ritual is made personal
This working is called The Settled Glass. A glass of water over your name paper is clouded with a pinch of flour and stirred only once with a wooden spoon, then a sprig of dried lavender is laid across its rim beside a pale blue candle. No one touches the glass until morning while the cloud sinks by its own weight, and the clear water is then given to a house plant, sediment and all.
- Your name beneath the glassI write your name and date of birth on a paper and lay it flat on my table. A clear glass of water is set directly on top of it, so the glass stands for your own mind.
- Clouding the waterA small pinch of flour goes into the water and turns it cloudy. That cloud is the noise you described to me, the thoughts that keep circling, and I name it with your own words as it spreads.
- Stirred only onceI stir the glass with a wooden spoon, once and only once. A second stir would keep the cloud moving; the whole working rests on being stirred a single time and then left alone.
- Lavender across the rimA sprig of dried lavender is laid across the mouth of the glass, from one side to the other. Lavender has calmed Mediterranean houses for as long as anyone remembers, and here it rests on top of the water like a hand held still.
- The pale blue candleA pale blue candle is lit beside the glass and I read your wish aloud. This is an old Anatolian way of resting water, letting it stand so what clouds it sinks to the bottom.
- Untouched until morningThe seal is that no one touches the glass until morning. I do not move it or check it. Whatever settles, settles on its own.
- Given to a plantIn the morning the clear water is poured into a house plant together with the sediment at the bottom. What settled is not thrown out; it feeds something green. Then I send you the written record by email.
