How to Love Yourself: A Wish Made for You, by You

Many people give love easily to everyone but themselves. Here is how to begin turning that kindness inward, and how the Hidrellez rose branch wish carries it.

Loving yourself begins with speaking to yourself the way you would speak to someone you care about. It is not vanity and it does not need a sudden transformation. It grows from small, repeated acts: noticing the harsh voice in your head and answering it more gently, keeping promises to yourself, accepting a compliment without pushing it away, and letting your mistakes be lessons instead of verdicts.

Why it is so hard for some people

People who struggle with self-love are often the most generous with others. They remember birthdays, listen for hours and forgive quickly. The kindness is there. It has just never been pointed inward. Common reasons include:

  • Growing up where praise was rare and criticism was common.
  • Believing that being hard on yourself is what keeps you good.
  • Measuring your worth only by what you do for others.
  • Carrying old mistakes long after everyone else has forgotten them.

Small practices that make a real difference

  1. Catch the critic. When you hear yourself say "I am so stupid", pause and ask whether you would say it to a friend.
  2. Write down three kind sentences. Things you would never think to say to yourself. Read them when the day is hard.
  3. Keep small promises. Drinking water, going to bed on time, finishing one thing you started. Each kept promise is a small act of trust in yourself.
  4. Let compliments land. Say thank you and stop there, without explaining why they are wrong.
  5. Practise a gentle no. Saying no to what drains you is a way of saying yes to yourself.

The Hidrellez rose tree

On the night of the fifth to the sixth of May, people across Anatolia and the Balkans celebrate Hidrellez, the arrival of spring. Wishes are written on paper and hung on the branches of a rose tree, left there overnight to be carried into the new season. My self-love working is built on that custom, with one difference: the wish is not for anyone else. It is made for you.

It is called the Rose Branch Note.

  • Three kind sentences are drawn from your own words, the things you have never said to yourself, and written with your name on a small piece of paper.
  • The paper is rolled.
  • It is fastened to the branch of a rose, in a pot or in a vase, with red ribbon wound once. Not a bow, just a single turn.
  • My love plate sits at the foot of the rose, and a pink candle is lit beside it.
  • The paper stays on the branch until the rose drops its first petal.

The seal: what the rose gives

When the rose lets go of its first petal, that petal is folded inside the rolled paper and kept. That is the seal: something the rose gives freely, not something taken. The paper is not burned, not thrown away and never read again. It has done its work.

This working does not ask for anyone else's love, and it does not bind you to anyone. It turns inward, toward the way you look at yourself.

Signs self-love is growing

  • Accepting a compliment without brushing it aside.
  • Saying no without an apology attached.
  • Buying yourself something small and not feeling guilty.
  • Getting something wrong and moving on without scolding yourself.

Where self-love leads

Self-love is often the ground other things grow from. Once you feel steadier inside, the Confidence Spell works on how you speak and stand among other people. If you would like to feel more radiant and noticed as well, the Glamour Spell turns toward the light you give off. The Self Love Spell is where it begins: how you see yourself.

Self-love is not selfishness

Some people fear that caring for themselves will make them careless of others. It usually does the opposite. When you stop running on empty, you have more patience, more warmth and more honesty to give. You stop saying yes out of guilt and start saying yes because you mean it, and the people around you feel that difference.

Be patient with the slow part

The critic in your head has had years of practice. It will not go quiet in a week. Each time you answer it gently, though, its voice loses a little of its authority. That is the real change, and it is worth the time it takes.

When the note is on the branch, I send you a written record of the working, the three sentences in their final form and the first signs of self-kindness to notice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start loving myself?

Begin by noticing your inner critic and answering it the way you would answer a friend. Keep small promises to yourself, accept compliments and let mistakes be lessons rather than proof of failure.

Why is it so hard to love yourself?

Harsh early criticism, the belief that self-criticism keeps you good and measuring your worth only by what you give others all make it harder. The kindness is usually there; it just has not been turned inward.

What is a self-love ritual?

A self-love ritual is a small, deliberate act of care directed at yourself. The Rose Branch Note, for example, hangs three kind sentences about you on a rose branch in the Hidrellez tradition.

What is Hidrellez?

Hidrellez is a spring festival celebrated on the night of 5 to 6 May across Anatolia and the Balkans. People write wishes on paper and hang them on rose trees to carry into the new season.
